The winter months can be harsh on all areas of your garden, but decking is often the hardest hit. In this blog, we are going to share tips and tricks for the ultimate maintenance so you can protect your decking and have it ready for summer!

Ronseal Decking Oil

This Ronseal oil is one of the most popular deck products for a reason, it’s easy to use and the process is incredibly simple. This particular product is a durable scuff-resistant oil that forms a waterproof barrier to protect against weathering, warping, swelling, drying and splitting, all of which are common issues caused by damp weather and, as a bonus, hardly changes the natural colour of your decking. Not only that, but it resists mould and algae growth and its fade resistant finish protects against UV rays. This oil is great for use on both hardwood and softwood decking.

Ronseal Ultimate Decking Oil

If you have maintained your deck throughout the year, you may not want to do another full treatment. This ultimate decking protection gives superior nourishment and protection from all the elements with a natural finish similar to the classic Ronseal oil, it’s great if you have previously used this and want to give your decking some extra protection. It’s rainproof in just 90 minutes and resists mould and algae growth and also lasts twice as long as standard decking oils so you don’t need to worry about topping it up when summer comes back around.

Joist End Grain Sealer

This product is a clear preserver, so it protects your decking whilst maintaining its colouring. It is formulated to protect against attack by wood-rotting fungi and will protect your deck from testing weather conditions but is only for use as a preservative. We recommend using two coats of this product for it to be more effective.

The perfect time to get your decking winter ready!

As the colder months creep in, it is best to make sure decking is prepared ready to be enjoyed no matter the weather!

Please see our top tips to keep a healthy and happy deck!

The first thing to remember is to remove all dirt, leaves and debris. Over time this can cause a build-up of bacteria and mildew. As the autumn leaves fall and the wind picks up our decking becomes a breeding ground for many natural yet harmful properties.

When leaves are left on a decked area this can cause staining and colour loss over time.

This can be easily prevented by following our top tips.

Photo by Kelli Tungay on Unsplash

This one is simple but very vital! Cleaning the decking area to eliminate the mildew, you can do this by using a soft bristle brush and warm water (alternatively use water mixed with washing up liquid), we advise leaving the solution to sit for 5 minutes.

If mildew/mould is left to sit, it can become a slippy and unsightly surface that will break down the properties of the deck over time. Cleaning any timber area will contribute extensively to a longer lifespan of the product.

Mould left to sit.

Always inspect your decking! It is extremely important to make sure no remnants are left on the decked area and the timber is clean and free from any buildup. If any mildew or mould remains on the deck you can end up sealing the bacteria which will cause rotting and unfortunately make the oil or treatment less effective.

The best time to treat your decking is as summer is drawing to a close, or throughout Autumn. This is because treatment product do not apply correctly if the weather is too hot or too cold. Make sure the decking is dry for 1 to 2 days before applying any treatments.

Top tip! Try to wait 7 days before placing any furniture or large items onto the decking.

The best treatment to use is a decking oil, here at eDecks we supply a range of decking treatments and oils.

https://www.edecks.co.uk/dept/382/Decking-Treatment

Decking oil is perfect for all softwood and hardwood decking, it helps restore natural oils lost through weathering and protects against mould and algae growth.

Treating composite decking is slightly different as the main benefit of composite decking is that it requires less maintenance than the timber alternative. Timber needs a little more care than composite decking. To keep your composite deck looking its best, you just need to keep it free from leaves and branches and clean the deck.  The best advice is to just use a suitable decking cleaner and consider it done!

When the worst weather hits, we recommend using a tarp to cover the decked area to protect it from the many stages of our unpredictable winter. We recommend this with any type of decking, this will stop the build-up of debris and protect from excessive rain, ice and snow. Melting snow and hail can cause the decking to warp.

We recommend treating decking or timber at least once a year to keep it in perfect condition! No matter the weather, we have you covered with our top tips!

The Ultimate Guide To Noggins & Decking Joist Supports

decking supports

A squeaky, bouncy or uneven decking can be very annoying, and irritating, not only that it can actually cause a safety issue.

Don’t be tripped up by an uneven deck – use your noggin and incorporate strengthen timbers when purchasing your decking boards or decking kit, available from £9.99 it’s a relatively small amount to pay and will offer piece of mind that your new decking is the strongest it can possibly be.

Reinforce your decking framework. Ideally at point of installation, although it’s easy enough to upgrade an existing deck.

Installing strengthening timbers will eliminate that annoying squeak and you will be left with a sturdy, level deck that will look great and stand the test of time with no annoying sounds or bouncing.

What are strengthening braces?

Also know as Noggins’, these short pieces of timber sit horizontally in-between the rafters, the amount you will need depends on the size of the decking, for very small decks only a few will be needed, for larger areas space them 400mm apart and offset them slightly so it’s easier to screw them in from the back of the joist.

Offset the noggins so it’s easier to screw them in from the back of the joist.

Here at eDecks we pre-cut our decking joist support braces to fit perfectly between joists at right angles to add extra strength your deck.
We also pressure treat our decking joist supports to supercharge them with protection from the elements.

Thanks to pressure treating your decking support brace is protected from rot, mould and insect damage to give it a longer lifespan compared to standard decking joist supports.
At eDecks we’d rather spend our time in the garden than shopping for the garden. That’s why we’ve included everything you need to construct a sturdy joist strengthening brace in our kits.

Why shop around when we’ll supply you with everything you need to strengthen your deck at eDecks.

The Best Decking Materials of 2019

Have you decided to build a new deck this summer? Well, before you crack out your toolbox, read on to find out more about all the best material options for your deck in 2019 and the pros and cons of each.

Plus – look out for the incredible savings you could make on decking materials at eDecks!

Decking Materials: Get to know your material options

So what are your options for decking materials? In 2019, there isn’t just plain wood – you can choose from softwood, hardwood, composite and antislip decking materials. Below is a brief outline on each decking material, and what they are most suited for.

Softwood Decking

Softwood is the cheapest decking material you’ll find; it has a beautiful natural aesthetic and is most commonly cut from either redwood or larch. It doesn’t, however, usually last as long as hardwood and requires much more maintenance to help it last as long as possible. Having said that, with proper care and maintenance, your softwood decking could last up to 25 years.

You can find softwood decking here.

Hardwood Decking

Hardwood is the most expensive option when it comes to decking, but it’s also usually seen as the most beautiful choice. Hardwood decking is most commonly cut from either Balau or Walnut trees. It’s not just chosen because of its beautiful finish; it lasts far longer than softwood with much less maintenance required – usually up to 50 years.

Composite Decking

Composite is a relatively new decking material that boasts some incredible features. It’s a combination of real wood fibres and plastic that allow your deck to have a natural wood finish, while also having some incredibly long lasting and waterproofing features that you wouldn’t get with completely natural wood. It’s also the lowest maintenance option – whereas all woods will require at very minimum annual cleaning and finishing, composite doesn’t need any refinishing to help it last. It should also last up to 50 years.

Composite decking can even come along with some cool features, like built-in lighting with solar panel charging.

Antislip

While probably not the most attractive option, antislip decking is a great choice if you either want to use your deck in wet weather, if you have a hot tub or if you want to minimise your chance of slips and falls. It’s definitely one of the safest decking options and with the many available finishes, it’s a very popular option.

Decking Materials: Product Options

Finding the right decking doesn’t end at picking a material – the materials come in a variety of product types. Again, each decking product has pros and cons to consider. Here is some information on the three main forms of decking:

Decking Boards

The most common way to buy decking is to simply buy decking boards. It allows for complete versatility; you can have any size or shape of decking you choose. It does require you to plan everything out to work out how much decking you’ll need, but eDecks can help you with boards that are cut to your specified size in many decking material types.

You can find all types of decking boards here.

Decking Kits

If you are hoping for a square or rectangular deck, it might be even simpler to order a cut to size decking kit. It will not only come with the exact boards you need but also pre-cut joists and a fixing kit to make your life as easy as possible. You can even buy decking kits that come with fencing and pergolas!

You can find decking kits here.

Decking Tiles

Decking tiles are likely the simplest to install; some even featuring interlocking systems. You can also buy some decking tiles with built-in features, like LED lights. You can also install decking tiles over an original deck to refinish it, as long as it is structurally sound. You can also create a ‘checkerboard’ pattern, which is an attractive look on some decks.
