Transform Your Small Garden with These Easy Ideas

For many people, their garden is a place to relax and escape from everyday stress. Unfortunately, not everyone has a large garden area, meaning they have to utilise as much space as possible. Here at eDecks, we understand the difficulty of creating a zen area and we’re on hand to help with tips and tricks for transforming your small space.

Lay artificial grass

Having real grass in small city gardens can be redundant as maintenance can be expensive and storing tools is a waste of space. Artificial grass introduces natural tones in small areas and makes the most of an urban environment. If you love nature but struggle to look after plants, plastic ones can look just as good! Adding natural wood furniture to match the plants will bring the area together. In the picture below they added a shaded area with polycarbonate sheets. This provides shade whilst allowing the sun to light the space.

Deck the whole area

Covering an entire outdoor space with decking may seem intimidating but it can make a small area feel dramatic. Hardwood decking or stained decking adds a contemporary vibe that will embrace natural elements, especially if you have plenty of plant life around. If you don’t want to occupy the little space you have with furniture, a bench made of reject decking or sleepers around the outside along the walls will bring the whole area together. Light coloured furniture will brighten up the area – so don’t be afraid to get creative with the paint!

Cover the area with a pergola

Here at eDecks, we love pergolas. They can open up any small space no matter what they’re being used for and break up outdoor spaces, add a hot tub or furniture to create the ultimate relaxation zone. We offer pergolas with decking or on their own, whatever your space requires, they can be customised to fit your needs. Pergolas are also wonderful at maintaining privacy in built-up areas, simply add a roof to keep your neighbours out!

Break up the space with paving

Not a fan of covering your whole outdoor area with decking? Break up the space with Indian stone paving. Separating spaces in gardens is important regardless of the size, you can designate sitting areas to keep a flow. We carry many different colours of paving to match our decking, so your garden can look perfect. If you’re nervous about undertaking such a large transformation take a look at the image below; separated garden spaces allow for seating and an allocated BBQ are, meaning you can make the most out of your small space!

Dog-Friendly Landscaping for Your Garden

It can be difficult to keep your garden beautiful whilst creating a fun environment for dogs. It’s important to make adjustments to suit both your dog and lifestyle, in this blog we will show you how to do just that without sacrificing your beautiful garden with dog-friendly landscaping!

Use aggregates to avoid grass damage

Dogs can cause grass to turn yellow, avoid this by using aggregates to hardscape areas your dog frequents. If you’re not a big fan of garden maintenance either, this is an easy solution for you! Hardscaped gardens require little to no maintenance and save you money since you won’t have to invest in garden maintenance tools. Aggregates are especially useful for dog owners because you can avoid muddy paws and digging, so no more eyesore holes dotted around your perfect garden!

Artificial grass

Similarly to aggregates, artificial grass stops fading and yellow spots, digging and most importantly, muddy paws. Artificial grass is often less toxic than chemically treated natural grass so if your dog has a tendency to try chewing new things, they will be safe. It’s also easy to clean up after your dog and can be wiped clean with ease!

Install a Sandbox

Does your dog have an insatiable need to dig despite your best efforts to stop them? It might be time for a sandbox. Give your dog their own designated digging area and let them have all the fun they want! We carry our very own sand and a wide range of timber so you can make your dog’s play area customised to your garden, meaning you don’t have to compromise your garden’s looks.

Border your flowers off

If your dogs can’t get enough of digging up your fresh soil or eating your fresh vegetables it might be time to add a border to keep them out. Garden borders can vary by size and desired look from log rolls to sleepers it all depends on your dog’s temper and, more importantly, the aesthetics of your garden. A garden border not only helps to keep animals away from your plant life, but it also makes it look much neater and can help to organise!

Upgrade Your Garden With These Easy DIYs

Around this time of year, it can be easy to forget about your garden. Here at eDecks, we think they need love all year round. So, roll up your sleeves and get those tools out, it’s time for some quick and effective garden DIY!

Shelf planters

It can be difficult to find space on small balconies but these shelf planters allow more green in a tight space, making it feel more open. Plants can be especially important in cities where there isn’t as much greenery. Here at eDecks, we have a wide range of reject decking, so these shelves can be made at a low cost and without any environmental impact. All you need are some wood screws, a drill and a saw to cut the pieces to your desired size. This simple DIY will only take a few hours but it will leave you with a beautiful addition to any garden space – big or small!

Floating containers

This garden DIY is, again, perfect for gardens of any size and make your fencing kinder to the eye. If you have ever grown strawberries you will know how they love to grow as far as they can and take over shared planters but with these small containers, they will stay a manageable size. Similarly, with the shelf planters, these boxes can be made from our wide selection of cheap reject wood and follow the same instructions: get some screws, a drill and a saw to cut the pieces to your desired size – and if you don’t want to use screws, waterproof glue works just as well!

Decorative gravel area

Creating a zen area is important for gardens of any space, and it may not even require any building! At eDecks, we have a wide range of gravel and aggregates of many colours and textures. All you need for this simple DIY is two different colour gravels, some low maintenance plants and, optionally, some hardwood decking or fencing to bring the area together. Everyone’s idea of zen is completely different, so if minimalist isn’t your idea of perfect – don’t worry, our next DIY will be right up your street!

Raised vegetable bed

Raised planter beds can be expensive, so making them yourself seems like the smartest option. We carry a range of discount sleepers, that are easy to cut and nail together and have a beautiful rustic look that looks fantastic in any garden, but this oak can be painted any colour! We recommend special sleeper nails for this wood since it is so thick, but the results will be worth it.

DIY jobs can seem intimidating but they are worth having a go! And with such low prices here at eDecks, the costs just make sense, creating things for yourself is much more rewarding.

Chicken Wire: Your Garden’s New Best Friend

Chicken wire has long been used for keeping animals at bay, but it has many uses you may not have even thought of! In this blog, we are going to expand your knowledge and maybe even inspire you to get some DIY done!

So what else can it do?

Chicken wire works very well in gardens and, as always, Pinterest is giving us great ideas. Take a look at the below garden ideas!

DIY Garden Trellis

Credit: Makers Corners on Pinterest

A garden trellis can set you back a lot of money, and it can be annoying if your plants don’t take to it – so why not make one yourself to save money! All you need is chicken wire, spare wood or pipes for the frame, wire cutters, thick gloves (for the shaping of the wire) and a staple gun. Firstly: construct the frame, then wrap the wire around the frame and finally, cut the wire and secure it to the bottom of the planter. This hack is simple but effective and it will look beautiful in your garden!

Garden cloche

Cloches are an easy, effective way to protect your plants from animals whilst allowing them to still get sunlight – but these unique domes also look wonderful in the home for a vintage decoration – so whether you’re using them in the garden or in your kitchen, here’s what you need: chicken wire, thick gloves, wire cutters and pliers. Make sure you shape it around a cylinder so you have a stable shape and then snip with the wire cutters. Once you’ve shaped it, twist the pieces of wire together. Finally, take the unfinished pieces and round them off to create a dome, attach them together by twisting, create the handle with extra wire and you’re done! Enjoy your cloche.

Vintage style frame

These indoor ideas are the perfect rustic decor for a low price. For this frame hack, you only need an empty frame, chicken wire, a staple gun and pliers. Simply spread the wire over the frame and staple it to the back and if you wish to add fabric like in the above picture, leave an opening at the top and thread it through, then staple after and you get a beautiful, homemade decoration, fantastic for Christmas!
