Composite Fencing: Is it right for your garden?

Composite fencing is an excellent choice for so many reasons – longevity, mould resistance and even little to no maintenance. But is it right for your garden?

In this article, we cover all the pros of composite fencing, as well as the occasions where it might be preferable to choose something different.

What is composite fencing?

A majority of fences are made from hard or soft woods, but that is set to change in the coming years. Composite wood is a relatively new building material that boasts an incredible array of attractive features.

Composite fencing is made from a mixture of plastic and real wood, usually recycled, making it a very eco-friendly option. The wood composition gives it a beautiful authentic look, while the plastic allows this fencing to last much longer than many entirely organic materials and it retains an incredible strength against the elements.

Not only is the wood composition often made from recycled materials, using composite fencing means your fence will last far longer than a 100% wood version – meaning fewer replacements will be needed in the future, and therefore fewer trees are cut down to replace them. So if you’re keen on being eco-friendly – composite fencing is probably the perfect solution!

Should you choose composite fencing?

Even if you’re not an eco-warrior, for most situations, composite fencing is the best choice for your garden.

Composite fencings top attributes are:

  • It lasts an incredibly long time; many manufacturers offer a minimum 20-year guarantee
  • It’s more weather proof than entirely wood products
  • It requires the least maintenance – no wood treatments, sanding or staining necessary
  • Composite is extremely rot and mould resistant due to its plastic component
  • It’s extremely strong but often cheaper than hardwood options, making it a great choice if you have pets
  • Whether you buy boards or panels, they are super simple to install yourself; boards are often designed to lock together and are even customisable.
  • There are a vast array of composite fencing styles, so whether you’re looking for something modern and contemporary, simple and easy or beautifully traditional – you’re bound to find the perfect design in a composite panel.
  • They can be pretty affordable; although not quite as cheap as some softwood options, composite fencing could surprise you in the wallet department!

Having said that, there are of course some minor drawbacks, as there is with any material.

Composite fencing can be slightly pricier than some softwood options; so if you’re looking for a more affordable fence, softwood may be the way to go. Do bear in mind that wood products, especially cheaper softwoods, require much more maintenance work and added costs such as wood treatments, cleaning products and sealers in order to help the wood stand up to rain and rot. Including the treatment costs and time to maintain your cheaper fence, it can often be more economical to invest in a composite fence if you do like the styles.

Although there are many styles, there are possibly fewer options than normal fence products. For example, you may be hard pushed to find more intricate designs, like the top lattice panels offered with normal wood products. Having said that, composite fencing does have an incredibly clean modern look to it that can lend itself more to contemporary styles, so if you are looking for a sleek finish – composite fencing will likely look better than any other material.

Where should you buy composite fencing?

Composite fencing can be a little more expensive than traditional pure wood fencing – but don’t worry. You can save yourself a lot of money by simply purchasing your fencing online; without the costs of showrooms and stores throughout the country, online retailers can offer you huge discounts on exactly the same products you’ll see at local hardware stores. So if you’re looking to get a great deal on your fencing (or any hardware products) looking online is a very cost effective solution.
